On January 23, 2024, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), in collaboration with the World Affairs Press and Springer-Nature, hosted an Ambassadors’ Roundtable and a book release at CCG’s Beijing headquarters. The event welcomed authors, ambassadors to China, editors, publishing industry professionals, diplomats, senior scholars, and members of the business community, who attended the launch and spoke on the impact of the latest book in the series, including more than 20 ambassadors and diplomats. The guests discussed international cooperation, opportunities for exchange with China in the fields of global governance, economy and trade, and cultural exchange, as well as their views on bilateral relations and global development in 2024.

CCG President Wang Huiyao hosted the release and roundtable discussion, while CCG Secretary-General Miao Lu introduced CCG’s latest publication.

In his opening remarks, CUI Chun, Chairman of World Affairs Press Co.,Ltd. highlighted the significance of this publication in light of international political disputes and military conflicts, the complex global development and security situation, and profound changes in international relations. Ambassadors are able to assess overall trends, help point us in the right direction promote cooperation, and freely discuss how we can enhance mutual understanding, ultimately seeking common ground despite our differences, which is of great significance. This book demonstrates the high regard that countries around the world have for China as well as the world’s expectations that China play a more certain and positive role in the current highly uncertain international situation. CUI Chun noted that this new book has the potential to further promote the engagement between China and the world and sharing opportunities that have come out of China’s development.

William Achauer, Editorial Director for Business, Economics, Politics, and Law at Springer Nature, noted that CCG has always recognized and emphasized the unique role of ambassadors and successfully created a platform where the global future can be discussed, making a significant contribution to promoting international understanding and cooperation. The Future of China’s Development and Globalization provides an outline of the history and current state of relations between various countries and China, ambassadors’ views on major issues, ways in which countries can cooperate with China in responding to global challenges, and the development prospects of countries in a world where China’s role is increasingly significant. He stated that the “China and Globalization” series actively explores the future of the world, which is highly meaningful.

CCG Secretary-General and co-editor of the “China and Globalization” series of books, Miao Lu, emphasized that in this rapidly changing world, the insights of the ambassadors to China on global affairs and China’s development are invaluable and highly illuminating. CCG has compiled these insights to better share their perspectives and provide solutions to the questions of China’s globalization pathway and other pressing global issues. She added that CCG was honored to welcome the contributions of ambassadors, diplomats, publishers, and think tank experts in this book and the previous publication, hoping sharing their vision for bilateral relations will deepen cooperation and tap into the future potential.

During the book release, CCG President and editor of the “China and Globalization” series, Wang Huiyao, provided a detailed introduction to the books. He noted that the Chinese translation of China and the World in a Changing Context: Perspectives from Ambassadors to China and the English book The Future of China’s Development and Globalization: Views from Ambassadors to China are part of the “China and Globalization” series and are collections of the insights of the ambassadors to China. The voices of the ambassadors are crucial, as they represent not only their respective countries but also serve as bridges to promote communication and understanding between China and the world. The publication of these two books enable readers to gain direct insights and experiences from the ambassadors. These books focus on bilateral relations as well as global challenges and future cooperation, reflecting the international community’s views and expectations of China’s development. Wang Huiyao stated that CCG is committed to continuing to promote such dialogues, drawing on voices and wisdom from around the world to foster the process of globalization and strengthen China’s role in it, jointly building a more resilient and forward-looking era of interconnected globalization.

In the subsequent discussion session, H.E. Siddharth Chatterjee, Resident Coordinator in China, United Nations congratulated CCG on the publication of these two books. He believes that the world is currently facing many crises, and their publication is timely, as these articles showcase the insights and foresight of ambassadors. He noted that the EU and China had a very busy 2023, with a great deal of exchange and mutual visits, adding that he hopes to continue this momentum to achieve even greater progress.

H.E. Rahamtalla Mohamed Osman, Ambassador of the African Union to China emphasized that despite the numerous challenges, global governance is essential for the survival and development of humanity. In the face of challenges to global governance , countries should unite and work together, while emerging countries and economies need to be involved in governance decision-making. Only when vulnerable groups and countries can also benefit is it a true paradigm of global governance.

Bart Vodderie, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of Belgium mentioned that the Prime Minister of Belgium chose China as the destination for his first visit of the new year, and the two countries have signed numerous agreements, which are crucial for further expanding bilateral relations. 2024 is a year of change for Belgium, and he sees more opportunities within this change. He hopes that with the new prime minister coming into office, he will lead the country’s people towards a more prosperous future and also hopes for more engagement with China as it plays a greater role in global issues.

H.E. Hannes Hanso, Ambassador of Estonia to China, reviewed the positive history between Estonia and China and spoke highly of the cooperation between the two countries on environmental protection. He believes that under the current circumstances, think tanks like CCG are particularly important. The publication of these books has enabled the views of ambassadors to China to be shared and given voices to countries like Estonia. He hopes for an even better future in this new year.

H.E.Thórir Ibsen, Ambassador of Iceland to China highlighted that Iceland and China share the same goals when it comes to addressing climate change issues and that both sides can work together to control carbon emissions, develop new energy sources, and advance carbon capture technologies. The mutual introduction and transformation of technology between enterprises of the two countries is feasible and he believes that cooperation between China and Iceland in industry can start with energy. He is confident that in the near future, both sides will be able to explore even greater areas of collaboration.

Parulian Silalahi, Deputy Head of Mission for the Embassy of Indonesia, believes that with its enormous economic size and classical philosophical wisdom. China will undoubtedly make significant contributions to human progress. Indonesia hopes to continue working hand in hand with China in 2024 to promote economic development, coordinate national strategies, strengthen cooperation in other areas, and advance the goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

H.E. Hussam Alhusseini, Ambassador of Jordan to China highly praised CCG’s openness and the platform it provides. He noted that people should change their way of thinking and can no longer continue to respond to the real world with a pre-war mindset. Although global governance currently faces major challenges, he believes that China can play an important leading role in helping people out of difficulties.

Aramiro Tai Rākena, Trade & Economic Counsellor at the Embassy of New Zealand stated that in terms of the bilateral relations between New Zealand and China, China has always been New Zealand’s largest trading partner. After the pandemic, there has been increased exchange and more frequent contact between the two countries, with flights gradually increasing. China benefits from New Zealand’s products and services, and vice versa. New Zealand looks forward to working with all parties to promote multilateralism, strengthen cooperation, especially in promoting trade links and cultural cooperation, and jointly address and explore issues related to climate change.

H.E. Signe Brudeset, Ambassador of Norway to China expressed great pleasure in seeing the increasing personnel exchanges between Norway and China after the pandemic and was also delighted to see that China had implemented a visa-free policy for a number of countries, making visiting China easier. Bilal Mehmood Choudhry, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Pakistan emphasized that the relationship between the embassy and CCG is very close, and such opportunities for dialogue are extremely valuable. He stated that China’s rise is a peaceful one, which can provide practical experience and references for other countries. He also pointed out the potential for bilateral cooperation between China and Pakistan, and in the future, both sides can play very important roles in international governance.

H.E. Paulo Nascimiento, Ambassador of Portugal to China, noted that the core mission of think tanks and diplomats lies in listening, expressing, understanding, and promoting people-to-people exchanges. Against the backdrop of increasing global interdependence and increased conflict, taking action and avoiding misunderstandings becomes particularly crucial. He encouraged the general public to also participate in the process of understanding different cultures to enhance international understanding and harmony. As all countries share the same destiny, it is imperative to work together to ensure open channels of communication, including visa-free policies, to bridge divides through the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and cultures to achieve win-win outcomes.

H.E.Alenka Suhadolnik, Ambassador of Slovenia to China stated that the upcoming 2024 Future Summit should focus on resolving key issues such as multilateralism and climate change. International human rights protection has made some progress in the global community, but continuous attention and improvement are still needed for the protection of women and children’s rights and gender equality. Furthermore, global governance should continue to address issues like climate change and biodiversity, promoting sustainable environmental development. Peace and sustainable development are complementary. She emphasized that both large and small countries should adopt a pragmatic approach to promote a framework for equal relationships between nations to build an effective framework for multilateralism, noting that trust is the key to future success.

H.E. Rafael Dezcallar de Mazarredo, Ambassador of Spain to China stated that CCG has made outstanding contributions to promoting multilateral dialogue, making it possible for the exchange of different views. With its rapid development and rich experience in the economic and trade sector, China hopes for a more balanced economic and trade structure with Europe in the future. He also mentioned China’s role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that as a responsible major country, China should take on more responsibilities in maintaining international peace. Although there are differences between China and the West in their understanding of human rights, he suggests maintaining an open and sincere attitude when discussing human rights issues. He emphasized that despite differences, peace, human rights, and sustainable development remain important directions for future cooperation.

H.E. Per Augustsson, Ambassador of Sweden to China stated that the world will still face many challenges in the new year, and China and Sweden, as interconnected and interdependent countries, should cooperate in areas such as climate and environment, global medical health, and sanitation to address these issues. He emphasized the importance of high-level dialogue on intergovernmental policy dialogue as well as the exchange of visits within civil society and that we should seize the opportunity for sustained and in-depth communication and dialogue, while emphasizing the importance of transparency and mutual trust in deepening and expanding bilateral relations. He pointed out certain restrictions on foreign tourists traveling to China and the need to explore whether relevant policies can be relaxed in the future and make travel more convenient.

H.E. Jürg Burri, Ambassador of Switzerland to China stated that the relationship between China and Switzerland is stable and productive, with many common positions on specific issues. While there are sometimes differences of opinion, Switzerland attaches great importance to its relationship with China and hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in important bilateral or multilateral areas, and to promote interaction between the two countries at all levels. Visits by leaders of the two countries this year opened important dialogue channels, and in the future, further strategic innovative dialogue can be had on finance and trade, trilateral cooperation on supporting developing countries, jointly promoting multilateralism, and respecting universal human rights.

CCG’s New Books:

The Future of China’s Development and Globalization: Views from Ambassadors to China

As the world continues to recover from the fear and uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, new challenges like increasing geopolitical tensions and the intensifying food and energy crises coming with them, as well as expanding climate change, have created additional obstacles to global economic recovery. This has exacerbated global inequality and helped the wave of anti-globalization, posing even more serious challenges to global governance. The origins of these challenges began long before the pandemic and have repercussions that will reach far into the future. The global power shifts, the return of China and Asia, the rise in influence of an economically and politically more capable and confident Global South, and multi-speed globalization, are just a few of the trends that began before 2020. Now it is the moment for the world to seek consensus and strengthen cooperation to set the basic structure for the future of globalization. How can we reach consensus and cooperate to meet these challenges? And what do other countries expect from China?

Many ambassadors to China generously shared their invaluable and illuminating perspectives on these issues—not only in conveying the views and experiences of their own country, but also for their insights into global affairs and China’s development.

Building on the success of our previous volume China and the World in a Changing Context: Perspectives from Ambassadors to China, CCG has invited 28 ambassadors to examine China’s role in this context of constant flux, focusing specifically on China’s perspective, including its trade and investment ties with other countries, as well as its role in multilateral regional relations and global governance. Their generous contribution has resulted in this meaningful work – The Future of China’s Development and Globalization: Views from Ambassadors to China.

China and the World in a Changing Context: Perspectives from Ambassadors to China(Chinese edition)

While the peak threat of COVID-19 has passed, its economic impact will still be felt in the short term. Meanwhile, escalating geopolitical conflicts and food and energy crises, compounded by climate threat, have seriously impacted countries around the globe, exacerbating global inequality, and fueling a wave of de-globalizationthat has slowed the pace of economic recovery. Some new trends that emerged before the pandemic, such as the global power shifts, the rise of Asia, the influence of an economically and politically more capable and confident Global South, and multi-speed globalization, have become increasingly prominent and will reach far into the future.

Every country needs a peaceful and stable environment and inclusive and healthy globalization to develop. Questions of how to build a peaceful and stable environment? How to promote healthy bilateral and multilateral relations? How to promote inclusive economic recovery? How we can work together to address today’s most pressing challenges ? And what do countries expect from China on these issues?

To explore solutions to these problems, CCG has invited ambassadors to China to share their insights and suggestions, and their generous contributions have resulted in two significant works: China and the World in a Changing Context: Perspectives from Ambassadors to China and The Future of Chinas Development and Globalization: Views from Ambassadors to China. The two volumes are part of CCG’s “China and Globalization” series co-edited by Dr. Henry Huiyao Wang, Founder and President of CCG and Dr. Mabel Lu Miao, Secretary of CCG, in which ambassadors to China share their insights on bilateral relations, bilateral economic, trade and cultural exchanges, multilateral cooperation and global governance, as well as China’s role in the world.

On January 23, 2024, the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) released the Chinese edition of China and the World in a Changing Context: Perspectives from Ambassadors to China in conjunction with an Ambassadors’ Roundtable hosted by CCG at the its headquarters in Beijing.
