Jeffrey Sachs, Vuk Jeremić & Henry Wang | Multipolarity, War, And The Future Of The UN
CIRSD | March 20 , 2026BEIJING, March 20, 2026 — The Center for China and Globalization (CCG), in partnership with Horizons, the flagship publication of the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD), hosted a high-level dialogue in Beijing on Thursday focused on multipolarity and the growing crisis of global governance.

The event marked the launch of the latest issue of Horizons, titled Pax Multipolaris? The Many-Body Problem, and featured remarks by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development; Vuk Jeremić, President of CIRSD and Editor-in-Chief of Horizons; and Henry Huiyao Wang, Founder and President of CCG.
Sachs delivered a sweeping critique of the current international order, arguing that the world is facing a convergence of geopolitical, ecological, technological, and governance disruptions. He said the decline of U.S. dominance, the rise of China and Asia, and the erosion of effective political leadership in the West are driving a period of exceptional instability. He also called for greater honesty in diplomacy and warned that peace must be restored before economic globalisation and sustainable development can be secured.
Jeremić focused on the implications of this transition for the future of international institutions. He argued that while multipolarity is already a reality, the multilateral system has failed to adapt to it. Stressing the need for reform, he pointed to the upcoming selection of the next UN Secretary-General as a possible opening for restoring credibility to global governance and said China could play an important role in shaping that process.
Wang said the discussion reflected the urgency of understanding a rapidly changing world and the need to identify stabilizing forces in an increasingly fragmented international system.
The exchange between Sachs and Jeremić anchored the event, combining a stark diagnosis of global disorder with a call for more serious diplomacy and institutional reform as the world moves deeper into a multipolar era.
